Des artistes américains du Land Art, Robert Smithson (1938-1973) est probablement le plus connu et le plus complexe, à cause de sa mort accidentelle à l'âge de 35 ans et en raison de son oeuvre marquée par l'entropie. Son oeuvre inspirée et visionnaire n'a cessé d'inspirer les artistes qui l'ont côtoyé ainsi que ceux des générations suivantes. Dessin, sculpture, film, photographie, son, peinture, écrits, etc. : la variété de ses productions fut constamment accompagnée par une réflexion autour de leur mise en oeuvre, qu'elles reposent au sol dans les galeries ou les musées, dans des mines à ciel ouvert, sur des îlots ou dans des régions retirées. Le présent ouvrage aborde principalement la manière dont Robert Smithson articulait la mémoire et l'entropie, deux notions qui lui furent chères, à travers des réflexions sur l'histoire, le langage et les réglages qu'il expérimenta entre le proche et le lointain.
